In the meantime, being out in nature and working out is really helping me. The Clemente is home to 13 performing arts, educational, and arts organizations that use the facility for rehearsals, creative development, and public performances, many of them free. I miss going to hot yoga and stretching and pushing myself. We dedicate our resources to maintaining affordable spaces for these artists to create, develop, promote, and present their work, and on the development of diverse audiences to whom to present them. Housed in a city-owned architectural landmark-quality building, The Clemente has two art galleries that also serve as multi-use spaces, four theaters, three rehearsal/multi-use rooms, and 43 visual arts studios. Founded in 1993 by three Puerto Rican, Uruguayan, and Dominican literary and performing artists to sponsor art exhibits and performances within the facility and in the greater community, The Clemente is focused on fostering, promoting, and supporting Puerto Rican/Latino arts, while establishing relations with like-minded people and organizations regardless of ethnicity. ![]() Her daddy is the sweetest and most handsome man in the world. I am now the mommy to a gorgeous little princess named Olivia Dawn Henderson. I have the prettiest little niece named Sky. We share a gorgeous mother named Serene Justice. The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center was named in honor of poet, journalist and activist Clemente Soto Vélez, who mentored generations of Latino artists in Puerto Rico and in New York City and left a rich legacy that contributed to the cultural, social and economic life of Puerto Ricans in New York City and Latinos everywhere. I'm the half-ssiter to the beautiful Victoria Justice. Many people come to New York for a career in the arts, but you come to the Lower East Side because you want a life in the arts. The trend arguably continues with computer generated arts.Īlthough we lost many of these neighborhood artists to the AIDS epidemic, to drugs, and to rising rents, many stayed, fought for tenant rights for themselves and their neighbors, created communities, kept the spirit and attracted the next wave of artists who inherited the disjointed, yet allied individuality and the freedom to live as you choose. This environment lent itself to conceptual, graffiti, and performance arts, and - in much the same way that nomadic tribes have limited engagement in non-material culture - body art. The neighborhood's housing stock was primarily limited to small tenement apartments and large housing developments which meant limited work space for creative output. The Lower East Side extended north to 14th St until realtors coined the term East Village in the 1960s. ![]() ![]() We are excited to bring together the artists and organizations of the Lower East Side with work that ranges from minimalism to radical archiving, from artists who range in age from 29 to 92, by those who set the tone for expressive freedom and the subsequent arrivals who inherited a culture that was unique to the area.
